What to Expect During Cardiac Surgery

A Guide for Patients and Families

A Message from Dr. Loumiotis

We understand that facing heart surgery can feel overwhelming. Our mission is to make you feel safe, well-informed, and cared for at every step. Cardiac surgery is more than just an operation—it is a journey of healing. My team and I will be with you throughout the process to ensure your experience is as smooth and stress-free as possible.

Dr. Loumiotis and his team are devoted to caring for you as a person, not just a patient. We know this time can feel overwhelming, and our promise is to provide comfort, reassurance, and steady guidance every step of the way. Our focus is on your healing, your peace of mind, and your future. Together, we will face this journey with trust and compassion—so you and your loved ones can look ahead with confidence and hope.

Before Surgery: Preparing Together

Your journey begins long before the operating room. From your very first visit, we work closely with you to:

  • Listen to your story and answer your questions

  • Explain your diagnosis and treatment options in clear, simple terms

  • Help you prepare with the right tests, medications, and instructions

  • Support your family and caregivers, so they know what to expect

  • If you have questions please ask us!

You will also meet members of our care team who will guide you through pre-surgical testing, anesthesia planning, and recovery planning.

The Day of Surgery:
What Happens

On the day of your operation, our team will be ready to care for you with compassion and expertise. Here’s what to expect:

  1. Check-in and Preparation – You and your family will be welcomed, and our nurses will help you get settled.

  2. Anesthesia – You will meet your anesthesia team, who will explain how they will keep you safe and comfortable throughout surgery.

  3. The Surgery – Dr. Loumiotis will perform your operation with precision and care.

  4. Recovery Room/ICU – After surgery, you will be monitored closely by our intensive care team until you are stable and comfortable.

Your loved ones will receive updates during the procedure, so they remain informed and reassured.

After Surgery: Healing in the Hospital

Recovery begins right away:

  • Close monitoring of your heart, lungs, and overall health

  • Pain management to keep you comfortable

Recovery at Home: Continuing Your Journey

Healing doesn’t stop when you leave the hospital. Our team provides detailed instructions and ongoing support:
